3. No images — or worse, the same images recycled

- You're 6+ months out and have time to build your own structured plan
- You're a naturally good test taker (you know who you are)
- You have prior experience with CAT-style tests (e.g., the GRE or NCLEX, both of which use adaptive engines)
- You already have access to a plethora of up-to-date study materials and practice exams
- The only practice tests or study guides in your budget are ones that flunk the red-flag checklist above
A bad practice exam doesn't just waste ~$60, it builds false confidence, or worse, hands you outdated or flat-out wrong answers, which is much more expensive when you have to retake the exam.

Quiz yourself: cover the interpretation, look at the image, write your answer, then check.
A heads-up on this approach: quizzing yourself off raw images means you're effectively writing your own practice questions as you go. The catch: you have to be confident enough to write your own question and trust your own answer. We strongly recommend pairing this with a study buddy or mentor who can sanity-check your interpretations — otherwise you risk reinforcing the wrong takeaway on a case you misread.
Week 11–12: Simulate the test
Take any practice exam you can find — even a flawed one — under strict timed conditions. The point isn't the score; it's training your brain to make decisions in ~75 seconds per item without panicking.
What to skip
- Generic "med tech" question banks that throw in 20 cytogenetics questions
- Decade-old textbook CD-ROMs
